Greetings,

My name is Ashantā. My major is Library and Information Science. I have a semester to go and I can earn my degree and pursue a career as a librarian. I currently work at the Chicago Public Library and I have been employed with the City of Chicago for 17 years. I started out volunteering at the library when I was sixteen years old and was eventually recommended for hire. One reason I love working in the library is because the environment is so peaceful, and It was a safe haven for me as a young adult. Another reason I enjoy working in the library is because the job allows me to do what I’m great at and that’s helping others. I am very passionate about my work, I’m ambitious, driven and highly organized. I think a unique characteristic that I possess is determination and persistence. Furthermore, I love reading or listening to a good book in my spare time, traveling the world, and spending time with my family and friends. Most importantly, I am a mother of a thirteen-year old girl named Aniyah who happens to be my whole world.

    Hi Ashanta,

    I think there would be many exciting opportunities at a large public library system such as Chicago. It is great that you are already established there. Do you plan to work in adult or youth services?

The four areas (affective, social, cognitive and identity) that I think is more relevant to me is cognitive. The most important thing that I learned from my PLN is that I learn by observing others. Ethics & Privacy

This week I explored privacy related issues on Facebook. After exploring the default privacy settings on my own Facebook account, I learned that Facebook was showing other users when I was active on my account, Facebook recognition was set to “on” which allowed Facebook to recognize if I was in a photo. I can be tagged in photos or videos without approval and more. These happened to be the default settings on Facebook upon creating an account. What surprised me the most was that Facebook tracks people’s personal traits and interests and list them for advertisers on its website. Not only are they advertising their user’s information, they are also making a profit off of users. This tells me that no one’s privacy or information matters when a profit is involved. The Potluck

Image source As a future librarian, I plan on using social media as a part of outreach to communicate information about library services and resources. I will use the platform to follow other libraries to exchange ideas, information and communicate with other librarians nationwide. I think social media can play a significant role in helping libraries stay relevant in a digital society. Nearly every organization has a social presence and I don’t see libraries being any different, therefore, I feel like the library has a place on social media. Social media can be useful for the library to share events, pictures and to engage with communities and I will simply use it as a marketing tool.
