Social Media Emerging Technology

Image source As a future librarian, I plan on using social media as a part of outreach to communicate information about library services and resources. I will use the platform to follow other libraries to exchange ideas, information and communicate with other librarians nationwide. I think social media can play a significant role in helping libraries stay relevant in a digital society. Nearly every organization has a social presence and I don’t see libraries being any different, therefore, I feel like the library has a place on social media. Social media can be useful for the library to share events, pictures and to engage with communities and I will simply use it as a marketing tool. This week I explored Howard Rheingold’s five media literacies. Howard Rheingold defined the five social media literacies necessary to be empowered in digital skills and information literacies. He said the most important fluency is in putting all five of the literacies together. The social media literacies are Attention, Participation, Collaboration, Network Awareness, and Critical Consumption. Many people do not realize that being social on the internet means a person has to have technological skills and literacy in order to effectively socialize through social media. Social media is a delusion and it has made users shallow and more inattentive. The social media literacies will help users to become more mindful and encourage critical thinking.
